During the sadhna performed in these nine nights, when the chitta shakti rises inside that is the time when sadhak works upon the demonic energies inside; then shakti Durga, the energy in the durg enters the battlefield to slay demons of desire, anger, greed, attachment, ego and lust.
A sincere sadhak, who is guided by a worthy Guru, He knows how the slaying of these demons occur inside with the help of various seed syllables. And, that is the whole reason of celebrating Navratri, to rise above the demonic tendencies inside and then on the day of Dussehra, the complete victory is celebrated.
